PURPOSE

We are looking for a highly motivated volunteer to join our Death Penalty team and support research and administrative tasks, including for the production of our annual death penalty report. You will help monitor and gather developments on the use of the death penalty worldwide from media and official sources, contributing to Amnesty International's authoritative research on this issue. Your work will help strengthen our advocacy, campaigning and litigation efforts to advance the abolition of the death penalty globally.

ABOUT YOU

You are an enthusiastic and organized individual who is passionate about human rights and the abolition of the death penalty. You should be comfortable managing large volumes of information and have experience with filing and retrieval systems, including manual and electronic databases. Whie you will receive training and mentoring from an experienced researcher, you should be able to work independently, use initiative and manage your own tasks. You should be available for 10-15 hours per week for a period of six months, be based in the UK and be able to attend our London office at least a few times a month.

Volunteer positions are unpaid, however travel and lunch expenses are provided.

KEY TASKS

• Assist the team's research by gathering and managing death penalty-related information, including through media monitoring and internet searches in official databases or other judicial sources.
• Process and analyse information on the use of the death penalty globally, and in particular support keeping a record of reported death sentences and executions.
• File and archive information on the death penalty collected through the team's monitoring, as well as information received from other teams and from other organisations

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Excellent working knowledge an ability to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and electronic databases
• Experience of collecting, recording, analyzing, evaluating and synthesizing information
• Fluent written and spoken English. Good knowledge of Arabic, Chinese or Vietnamese is desirable
• Commitment to human rights and demonstrated interest in anti-death penalty work
