JOB PURPOSE

As Amnesty International's Regional Researcher for North Africa, you will lead on the development and implementation of impactful research and campaigning strategies across the region.

You will be responsible for monitoring and analysing human rights developments, conducting field missions, and representing Amnesty International to external stakeholders. Your work will directly contribute to the organisation's goal of addressing grave human rights violations and promoting justice and accountability.

Please note that this position is based in Paris. To be considered for this role, the applicant must hold working rights in France.  

This is a fixed-term contract opportunity running through to 31st December 2025.

ABOUT YOU
You are an experienced human rights researcher with deep knowledge of North Africa's political, legal, and cultural landscape. You possess strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, and are fluent in English, Arabic, and French. You are confident in leading field research, drafting high-impact reports, and engaging with a range of stakeholders from civil society to government bodies.

You're a strong team player, experienced in cross-functional collaboration, and adept at managing multiple priorities. You bring sound political judgement, diplomacy, and a deep commitment to the defence of human rights. Experience in economic and social rights research is highly desirable.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement comprehensive research and campaigning strategies focused on human rights priorities in North Africa.
  • Monitor, investigate, and analyse human rights developments to produce timely, independent, and impartial assessments.
  • Lead and participate in field research missions, including crisis response, and prepare relevant security and political briefings.
  • Represent Amnesty International in a variety of forums including media, civil society networks, and governmental and intergovernmental platforms.
  • Build and maintain networks with key partners and stakeholders to support effective information gathering and strategy implementation.
  • Write high-quality reports, briefings, and other materials for publication and internal use.
  • Provide expert advice, coordinate research efforts, and contribute to the development of team strategies and organisational priorities.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting human rights research or work on related issues.
  • Specialist knowledge of North Africa and key human rights concerns in the region.
  • Fluency in English, Arabic, and French, with excellent writing skills in English; Arabic and French writing skills are an asset.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex information and develop strategic responses to human rights challenges.
  • Experience in producing high-quality written outputs for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to manage competing demands and work effectively both independently and in teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with sensitivity to working with survivors and vulnerable communities.
  • Familiarity with participatory research methods and digital communications channels is desirable.
