Researcher – Abuja (Nigeria)

Directorate: Amnesty International Nigeria National Office
Location: Abuja
Job Type: Full-time
Working Hours: 40
Closing Date: 22 September 2025

Amnesty International Nigeria is seeking an experienced and dedicated professional to lead and support human rights research, advocacy, and crisis response in Nigeria. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in some of the most urgent and challenging human rights contexts.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Researcher will develop and implement research programmes to address Amnesty International Nigeria's priority areas. This includes conducting in-depth investigations into human rights violations, producing timely and high-quality reports, briefings, and press releases, and responding rapidly to crises, such as situations of armed conflict or mass atrocities.

The role involves field research, fact-finding missions, building strong relationships with activists, civil society organisations, and decision-makers, and contributing to advocacy strategies that drive meaningful change. The postholder will play a crucial role in documenting violations, shaping campaigns, and representing Amnesty International in high-pressure environments.

ABOUT YOU

The suitable candidate:

  • Holds a bachelor's degree in social sciences, law, international relations, or related disciplines (a master's degree is an advantage).
  • Has at least 7 years' experience working in human rights, development, or social justice, including field research; experience in conflict-affected areas is desirable.
  • Possesses strong knowledge of international human rights law and humanitarian law.
  • Demonstrates excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills in English; proficiency in a major Nigerian language or pidgin is desirable.
  • Has deep knowledge of Nigeria's human rights landscape, socio-political, cultural, and economic issues.
  • Is skilled in engaging with diverse stakeholders, including survivors of violations, government representatives, and the media.
  • Can work effectively under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Has strong digital security awareness and proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
  • Already holds the right to work and live in Nigeria.
